Sobu Main Line

Japanese: 総武本線 - そうぶほんせん
Sobu Main Line

The name of the East Japan Railway Company's track that runs from eastern Tokyo to northern Chiba Prefecture. It consists of 120.5 km between Tokyo and Choshi, and 4.3 km between Ochanomizu and Kinshicho. There are 8.9 km of freight lines between Koiwa and Kanamachi, and 11.7 km between Koiwa and Etchujima freight. The 34.4 km section between Kinshicho and Chiba is quadruple track, the 65.2 km section between Sakura and Choshi is single track, and the rest are double track and DC electrified. It is a main railway line that connects northern Chiba Prefecture (Shimousa Plateau, Kujukuri Plain) with Tokyo, and cities along the line include Ichikawa, Funabashi, Chiba, Yotsukaido, Sakura, Yachimata, Yokaichiba, Asahi, and Choshi. Between 1894 and 1904 (Meiji 27-37), the Sobu Railway opened the section between Ryogokubashi (now Ryogoku) and Choshi, and was nationalized in 1907. In 1932 (Showa 7), the Ochanomizu-Ryogoku section was opened, and in 1972 (Showa 47), a new underground line was opened between Tokyo and Kinshicho, and rapid trains began operating. Electrification was completed between Chiba and Choshi in 1968 and 1974, and now all passenger trains are electrified. Rapid trains that run directly between the Yokosuka Line do not only run directly on the Sobu Main Line, but also on the Narita Line, Sotobo Line, Uchibo Line, and other lines, and local trains west of Chiba enter the Chuo Line at Ochanomizu and run directly to Nakano and Mitaka. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, it became part of the East Japan Railway Company.
