Battle of Shizugatake
A decisive battle between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie at Shizugatake in Omi Province in 1583. After the Honnoji Incident, Hideyoshi rose to power, and the struggle for leadership between Katsuie, a senior retainer of the Oda clan, intensified, leading to a decisive battle on April 21st. Hideyoshi won the battle, and Katsuie was cornered in his castle, Kitanosho, Echizen, and committed suicide, while Hideyoshi established his position as Nobunaga's successor. The heroic efforts of Hideyoshi's army, Fukushima Masanori, Kato Kiyomasa, Kato Yoshiaki, Hirano Nagayasu, Wakisaka Yasuharu, Katagiri Katsumoto, and Kasuya Masao, in this battle are known as the Seven Spears of Shizugatake.

1583年近江(おうみ)国賤ヶ岳で,豊臣秀吉と柴田勝家が戦った決戦。本能寺の変後台頭した秀吉と,織田家の宿老勝家の主導権争いが激化し,4月21日決戦が行われた。戦いは秀吉の大勝に終わり,勝家は居城越前北庄(きたのしょう)に追いつめられ自刃し,秀吉は信長の後継者の地位を確立。なおこの戦いでの秀吉軍の福島正則,加藤清正,加藤嘉明,平野長泰,脇坂安治,片桐且元,加須屋真雄の奮戦ぶりを賤ヶ岳の七本槍という。
