A general term for crustaceans grouped under the class Malacostraca. The basic structure consists of a 5-segmented head, followed by 8 thoracic segments, 6 abdominal segments, and a telson segment. Each segment has appendages, which are significantly modified according to function. They are highly differentiated in both morphology and ecology, and are the major group of crustaceans. There are over 22,000 known species, divided into 16 orders, including decapods, stomatopods, and euphausiids. The name "malacostraca" means that they are softer than the shells of mollusks. 軟甲綱 Malacostracaとしてまとめられる甲殻類の総称。基本的な体制は,頭部 5節に続いて胸部 8節,腹部 6節,尾節からなる。各節は付属肢をもつが,機能に応じた変形が著しい。形態,生態とも高度に分化しており,甲殻類中の主要群である。2万2000種以上が知られており,十脚類,口脚類,オキアミ類など 16目に分けられる。軟甲という名は,貝類の殻に比べてやわらかいという意味である。(→節足動物)
