Herodium

Japanese: ヘロディウム（英語表記）Herodium

Located about 12 km south of Jerusalem and 4 km southeast of Bethlehem, this artificial hill (718 m above sea level) is the remains of a palace fortress built by Herod the Great (completed around 15 BC). During the First Jewish War (66-70, 132-135), it served as a base for the Jewish rebels. The top of the hill is carved into a circle, which contains the buildings of the palace fortress. The perimeter is surrounded by a double wall (the outer wall has a diameter of 62 m), and along the circumference are one powerful circular tower and three semicircular towers on the north, south, east and west sides.

エルサレムから南へ約12km，ベツレヘムの南東約4kmの地点にある人工の丘(標高718m)で，ヘロデ大王が築いた要塞宮殿の跡(前15年ころ完成)。ユダヤ戦争(第1次66‐70年，第2次132‐135年)のときには，ユダヤ反乱軍の拠点となった。丘の頂上は円形にえぐられており，その中に要塞宮殿の建物が収められている。外周は二重城壁(外側城壁の直径62m)でめぐらされ，円周に沿って東西南北に強大な円形塔1基と半円形塔3基が配されている。
