Subject and predicate - shugojutsugo

Japanese: 主語･述語 - しゅごじゅつご

A term in grammar and logic. It is a commonly known term, and in Japanese language education at elementary schools, the subject is taught as the part of the sentence "What (wa) does," "What (wa) is like," and the predicate is the part that corresponds to "how to do," "donda," or "what" in the sentence. However, the grammatical subject, especially, is not a very clear concept when you dig a little deeper, and even for a specific language, there are often differences in how researchers understand it.

文法や論理学の用語。その概略については，日本ではすでに小学校の国語教育で〈何が(は)どうする〉〈何が(は)どんなだ〉〈何が(は)何だ〉の〈何が(は)〉に当たるものを主語，〈どうする〉〈どんなだ〉〈何だ〉に当たるものを述語という，と教授するほどで，一般にも周知の用語である。だが，特に文法上の主語は，多少掘り下げて考えると，さほど明快な概念ではなく，特定の一言語についてさえ，研究者によってとらえ方に差があることが少なくない。
