Mysterious Tales - Shikai Shosetsu (English)

Japanese: 志怪小説 - しかいしょうせつ（英語表記）Zhì guài xiǎo shuō

A collection of short stories about supernatural phenomena, ghosts, and monsters from the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties periods in China. Zhiguai means "to write about the mysterious," and is a word found in Zhuangzi. Today, these stories are called "novels," but people at the time considered them to be part of history books. This is also related to the fact that Gan Bao, the author of the representative work of this genre, Soushinji, was a historian. In other words, people at the time seriously confronted strange phenomena and tried to explore their meanings through these stories.

中国，魏晋南北朝時代の，超自然の現象や幽霊･化物にまつわる短いエピソードを集めた一群の記録集。志怪とは〈怪を志（しる）す〉の意で，《荘子》に出ることば。現在では〈小説〉と呼ばれるが，当時の人々はむしろ歴史書の一部と考えていた。このジャンルの代表作品である《捜神記（そうしんき）》の筆者干宝（かんぽう）が歴史家であったこともそれと関連する。すなわち当時の人々は，こうした記録を通して，怪異の現象に真剣に相対し，その意味を探求しようとしていたのである。
