…The genus Citropsis , which is thought to be the ancestor of citrus fruits, is found only in the African continent. Primitive citrus fruits such as papedas are found in the Indian continent, but the genera Citrus, Fortune, and Trifoliate Orange are not native to Australia, and the closely related Microcitrus and Eremocitrus are found there. The major citrus fruits today, such as lime, pomelo, lemon, citron, sweet orange, bitter orange, and ponkan, are thought to have originated in the region centered on Assam in northeastern India and the Brahmaputra River basin, while trifoliate orange and yuzu originated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and kumquat originated in Southeast Asia and southern China. …
