German Protestant theologian. Professor of systematic theology at the University of Munich. Influenced by E. Schlink, G. von Rad, E. Bloch, and others, he developed his own unique "theology of history." He understands the whole of history as a revelation from God, and sees in Jesus' resurrection a foresight of the end that oversees all of history. While traditional theology stands on the standpoint of salvation history and existence and separates itself from world history, his theology rises to an understanding of God through historical understanding. It has been called a "theology of reason," a "Christology from below," and a "theology of universal history."

ドイツのプロテスタント神学者。ミュンヘン大学の組織神学教授。シュリンクE.Schlink，ラートG.von Rad,E.ブロッホなどの影響を受け，独自の〈歴史の神学〉を打ち出した。歴史全体を神の啓示として理解し，その歴史全体を見渡す終りの先取りをイエスの復活の中に見る。従来の神学が救済史や実存の立場に立って世界史と分離したのに対し，彼の神学は歴史学的認識によって神認識へと昇っていく。それは〈理性の神学〉〈下からのキリスト論〉〈普遍史の神学〉と言われる。
