The first Byzantine emperor of the Isaurian dynasty (reigned 717-741). He was the commander of the Anatolian military district and succeeded Theodosius III to the throne. He repelled the Islamic forces' attack on Constantinople and restored western Asia Minor. His prohibition of idolatry (iconoclasm) caused great chaos within the country.
