1930‐ American conductor. Born in the suburbs of Paris, he was educated in Pittsburgh. He conducted leading orchestras from an early age and was called a "child prodigy." In 1951 he studied in Italy. In 1960, at the young age of 30, he appeared at the Bayreuth Festival and attracted attention by conducting Lohengrin. In 1965 he became music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and also served as principal conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.
