Lorin Maazel

American conductor. Born in the suburbs of Paris, he was educated in Pittsburgh. He conducted leading orchestras from an early age and was called a "child prodigy." In 1951 he studied in Italy. In 1960, at the young age of 30, he appeared at the Bayreuth Festival and attracted attention by conducting Lohengrin. In 1965 he became music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and also served as principal conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1972 he became music director of the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1982 he was appointed general director of the Vienna State Opera.

アメリカの指揮者。パリ郊外に生まれ，アメリカのピッツバーグで教育を受ける。少年時代から一流楽団を指揮，〈神童〉といわれた。1951年イタリアに留学。60年30歳の若さでバイロイト音楽祭に登場し，《ローエングリン》を指揮して注目された。65年ベルリン･ドイツ･オペラの音楽監督に就任，ベルリン放送交響楽団の首席指揮者を兼務。72年からはクリーブランド管弦楽団の音楽監督。さらに82年ウィーン国立歌劇場の総監督に就任。
