The allocation of frequencies to be used by radio stations to prevent interference in radio communications and ensure fair and efficient use of radio waves. In this case, both internationally and domestically, the frequency band allocation table stipulated by the Radio Regulations annexed to the International Telecommunication Convention must be followed. This divides the frequency band into those that are used globally and those that can only be used within the three regions in which the world is divided. Japan belongs to the third region, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications stipulates the frequency allocation table. According to this, the following frequencies are allocated for radio broadcasting: standard radio broadcasting from 525 kHz to 1,605 kHz, shortwave broadcasting from 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 15, 17, 21 and 25 MHz, very short wave (FM) broadcasting from 76 MHz to 90 MHz, television broadcasting from 90 MHz to 108 MHz and 170 MHz to 222 MHz in the VHF band, 470 MHz to 770 MHz in the UHF band, and 12,092 GHz to 12,200 GHz in the SHF band. In addition, other frequencies are allocated to land mobile, maritime mobile, aeronautical mobile, radio positioning services and other ground services, space radio communication services, and radio astronomy services.
