American chemist. Born in Burlington, Iowa. After earning his degree from the University of Illinois, he became a lecturer at the same university and Harvard University, and in 1928 became director of basic research at DuPont's Central Laboratory. He conducted systematic research into polymers, and invented synthetic rubber (neoprene, industrialized in 1932) and the synthetic fiber nylon (patented in 1937).
