Zhou Wen Jǔ (English spelling)

Japanese: 周文矩 - しゅうぶんく（英語表記）Zhōu Wén jǔ

A Chinese court painter of the Southern Tang Dynasty during the Five Dynasties. Born in Jurong (Jiangsu Province). Dates of birth and death unknown. He served the later emperor Li Yu and became a Hanlin Taizhong. He was particularly skilled in landscapes, figures, and especially paintings of ladies-in-waiting, and studied under Zhou Fang to further enhance his elegance in expression. During the reign of Li Jing, he collaborated with landscape painter Dong Yuan and bird-and-flower painter Xu Chongsi on Scroll Appreciating the Snow (1949, lost), demonstrating the high standard of the Jiangnan painting world during the Five Dynasties. His renowned works include Scroll of the Imperial Court (Cleveland Museum of Art), Scroll of Dawn at the Tang Dynasty Palace (Billa i Tatti), Scroll of Figures in the Lapis Lazuli Hall (Metropolitan Museum of Art), and Scroll of Li's Subjective Go Play (Freer Gallery of Art).

中国，五代南唐の宮廷画家。句容(江蘇省)の人。生没年不詳。後主李煜（りいく）に仕えて翰林待詔となった。山水，人物，ことに仕女画(美人画)を最も得意とし，周昉（しゆうぼう）に学んでさらにその表現に繊麗さを加えた。また，中主李璟（りえい）のとき，山水画家の董源，花鳥画家の徐崇嗣らとともに《賞雪図巻》(1949，亡失)を合作し，五代における江南画壇の水準の高さを示した。伝称作品に《宮中図巻》(クリーブランド美術館)，《唐宮春暁図巻》(ビラ･イ･タッティ)，《琉璃堂人物図巻》(メトロポリタン美術館)，《李後主観碁図巻》(フリーア美術館)などがある。
