A species of the genus Peacock palm in the family Palmaceae (APG classification: Palmaceae). The trunk is erect and single, reaching a height of 20 meters. The leaves are 5 to 6 meters long, glossy dark green, and twice-lobed pinnate. The leaflets are V-shaped (inwardly convoluted) in cross section. Usually, the leaflets of pinnate leaves in the palm family are inverted V-shaped (outwardly convoluted), but only two genera, Peacock palm and Phoenix palm, have V-shaped pinnate leaflets in cross section. The flowers are unisexual, with female flowers blooming the year after the male flowers. The spadix is 3 meters long and hangs down in a bead-like bundle. The fruit is globular, 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter, dark blue or reddish brown. The seeds are globular and glossy black. The inflorescence forms buds between the petiole and the annular nodes where the petiole attaches; during the flowering season, the topmost bud blooms and gradually spreads to the lower nodes, and once the bottommost nodes have finished flowering and fruiting, the entire plant dies. When the stalk is cut, sap comes out, which can be consumed as a beverage, boiled down to sugar, and fermented to make palm wine. Sago starch can be extracted from the pith. The closely related common toad palm, C. mitis Lour., grows in Malaysia and Myanmar (Burma); its trunk branches from the base and does not die even when it reaches flowering age. There are about 27 species of the genus Toddy Palm distributed in tropical Asia, New Guinea and Australia, and they are classified by leaf shape, with some single-trunked ones having huge leaves. They come in single-trunked and clumping varieties, and are usually 7.5 meters tall, but the single-trunked ones have much larger trunks and leaves. They are used for indoor decoration and should be kept above 0℃. [Toshihiko Satake April 16, 2019] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
