Kaneshige Toyo - Sadness Toyo

Japanese:
Kaneshige Toyo - Sadness Toyo

Ceramic artist. Born in Imbe Village, Wake County, Okayama Prefecture (present-day Imbe, Bizen City). His real name was Isamu. As the eldest son of the Kaneshige family, one of the six famous Bizen ware families, he trained under his father, Baiyo. He started out making sculptures, but he continued to hone his skills by incorporating techniques from Shizutani ware, overglaze Bizen, and Mushiake ware, among others. It is said that Toyo first turned the wheel in 1930 (Showa 5) when he was 34 years old, and around the age of 40, he left his craftsmanship behind and turned to tea ceremony Bizen ware, modeled on Bizen ware (Ko-Bizen) from the Momoyama period. He succeeded in making tea utensils that were heavy, meticulous, and bold, and became the founder and new leader of the revival of modern Bizen ware. In 1981 (Showa 31), he was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property of Bizen ware.
