A city in the southeastern part of Kanagawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1907. It occupies the central part of the Miura Peninsula and includes the Uraga and Kurihama districts. The central city area, facing Tokyo Bay, developed as a port city of Yokosuka Port. In 1865, the Tokugawa Shogunate began construction of a Western-style shipyard. In 1877, it was designated a naval port, and naval facilities such as naval bases and arsenals increased. Inland, army facilities related to the Tokyo Bay Fortress were established. Even today, it has a strong military character, with bases for the U.S. Navy and the Self-Defense Forces, and the National Defense Academy. There are automobile factories in Oppama and Taura, shipbuilding factories in Uraga, and large food and machinery factories, and the city's manufacturing shipments amounted to 1.6791 trillion yen (2003). Yokosuka Port was designated a trading port in 1948, and a new port was completed in the Ogawa district in 1974, which is used for automobile exports and other purposes. The Yokosuka Line, Keikyu Main Line and Kurihama Line run through the city, and large housing complexes have been developed in the Kurihama and Uraga areas since the 1960s. Kannonzaki, Kinugasa Park, and the grave of Miura Anjin (W. Adams) (historic site) are located here. Area: 100.83 ^km2 . Population: 418,325 (2010).

神奈川県南東部の市。1907年市制。三浦半島中央部を占め，浦賀，久里浜地区を含む。東京湾に臨む中心市街は横須賀港の港湾都市として発達，1865年幕府が洋式造船所を着工，1877年海軍港に指定され，鎮守府や工廠などの海軍施設が増加，内陸には東京湾要塞(ようさい)関係の陸軍施設が設置された。現在も米海軍と自衛隊の基地，防衛大学校があり軍事的性格が強い。追浜(おっぱま)，田浦地区の自動車，浦賀地区の造船のほか食品・機械工業の大工場があり，１兆6791億円（2003）の製造品出荷額を上げている。横須賀港は1948年貿易港に指定され，小川地区に1974年新港が完成し，自動車の輸出などに利用されている。横須賀線，京浜急行電鉄本線・久里浜線が通じ，久里浜・浦賀地区には1960年代から大規模な住宅団地が造成された。観音崎，衣笠公園，三浦按針（W.アダムズ）の墓（史跡）がある。100.83km²。41万8325人（2010）。
