Dates of birth and death unknown. He was an immigrant engineer in the Asuka period, and is known as a devout Buddhist. In the Fuso Ryakki, he is described as a Chinese man from the Great Tang Dynasty, named Shiba Tatsuto, who was a morokoshi no ayahito kuratsukuri no suguri (a village of morokoshi) and came to Japan in 522 (the 16th year of the reign of Emperor Keitai). He built a hermitage in Sakatahara, Takechi County, Yamato (Sakata, Asuka Village, Takaichi County, Nara Prefecture), where he enshrined the principal image and worshipped it, leading to the general public saying that he was a god from the Great Tang Dynasty. The Nihon Shoki records that in 584 (the 13th year of Emperor Bidatsu's reign), he cooperated with Soga no Umako to promote Buddhism, and that he turned his 11-year-old daughter Shima (Zenshin-ni) into a nun, had her perform a memorial service for the Buddhist temple built by Umako, and donated her ashes. His son Tasuna (date of birth and death unknown) also became a monk and took the name Tokusei to pray for the repose of Emperor Yomei's soul. Tasuna's son was the famous Tori Buddhist sculptor (Kuratsukuri no Tori), who made outstanding achievements in building temples and Buddha statues.
