A single species in one genus, this perennial herb of the Asteraceae family is found in eastern and southern Asia (illustration). It grows on the forest fringes of mountainous areas west of the Kanto region. It grows to a height of 50-100cm. The trunk stops growing at about 30-50cm, and 2-4 branches unfold at an angle. The leaves are lanceolate, alternate and sparsely toothed. The leaves on the trunk reach a length of 15cm, but those on the branches are much smaller. Flowers appear from August to October as terminal heads on short twigs that emerge from the axils of the leaves on the branches. The heads consist of tubular and ray florets, and the flowering diameter is small at 4-5mm.
