Mr. Honma

Japanese: 本間氏 - ほんまうじ

A local lord of Sado Province. The Honma clan was a vassal whose main territory was in Sagami, and was given the position of land steward in Sado during the Jōkyū War. The first appearance of the clan in historical documents is in 1271 (Bun'ei 8), when it was decided that Nichiren would be exiled to Sado, and it is written, "In a place called Ichi (Yochi) of Honma (Honma), a man called Umataro, the deputy governor of Ichi (Yochi), Rokurōzaemon-no-jō, was placed in the care of him" (Nichiren's writings, "Shoshō Gofumushi Gosho"). Another document indicates that Honma Rokurōzaemon was in the shugosho of Sado. As Sado was the tokusō territory of the Hojo clan, the Honma clan was likely appointed as shugodai.

佐渡国の国人。本間氏は相模に本領をもつ御家人で，承久の乱で佐渡に地頭職を得た。史料上の初見は，1271年(文永8)日蓮の佐渡配流が決定されたとき，〈ほんま(本間)のいち(依智)と申ところに，いち(依智)の六郎左衛門尉殿の代官右馬太郎と申者あづかりて〉(日蓮遺文〈種々御振舞御書〉)とあり，別書により，この本間六郎左衛門が佐渡の守護所にいたことがわかる。佐渡は北条氏の得宗領であるから，本間氏は守護代に任ぜられたのであろう。
