The width of frequency change in frequency modulation. In other words, in frequency modulation, the carrier frequency changes in response to the modulating signal. Therefore, the carrier frequency when there is a modulating signal input deviates from the carrier frequency when there is no modulating signal input. The frequency of this deviation is the frequency deviation. The value obtained by dividing the frequency deviation by the modulating signal frequency is called the modulation index. The modulation index corresponds to the amplitude of the phase deviation in phase modulation. [Tanaka Yoshiaki]

周波数変調における周波数変化の幅。すなわち，周波数変調においては，変調信号に対応して，搬送周波数が変化する。したがって，変調信号入力がある場合の搬送周波数は，変調信号入力がない無変調時の搬送周波数からずれる。このずれの幅の周波数が周波数偏移である。周波数偏移を変調信号周波数で割った値を変調指数という。変調指数は，位相変調における位相偏移の振幅に相当している。【田中良明】
