[Karnataka and Hindustani music]
Due to differences in geography, climate, language, and history, modern Indian classical music is broadly divided into Karnataka music (South India) and Hindustani music (North India), but the actual performance remains the expression of raga by solo playing and singing accompanied by an accompanist. The Gandharva tradition came to an end due to the influence of the Muslim invasion, but in terms of musical form, the ālāpti (improvisation) style found in the theoretical text Sanghita Ratnakara (meaning "treasure house of music") written in the 13th century at the beginning of the invasion is followed in both the north and south. ālāpti is divided into raga ālāpti (the part improvised by raga only without tala) and rūpaka ālāpti (the part in which percussion instruments accompany the tala). ...
