The factors behind this new development were, first, the development of lyric poetry, which turned from the moralistic tendencies of the Baroque era toward a new contemplation of nature and life; second, the appearance of the piano, an instrument that supported the voice and performed psychological and descriptive functions; and third, the demand for salon art that accompanied the rise of civil society. The remarkable development of the 19th century Romantic lied, which began with Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752-1814) and Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832) as pioneers and continued through Schubert, R.
