The factors behind this new development were, first, the development of lyric poetry, which turned from the moralistic tendencies of the Baroque era toward a new contemplation of nature and life; second, the appearance of the piano, an instrument that supported the voice and performed psychological and descriptive functions; and third, the demand for salon art that accompanied the rise of civil society. The remarkable development of the 19th century Romantic lied, which began with Johann Friedrich Reichardt (1752-1814) and Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832) as pioneers and continued through Schubert, R. Schumann, Brahms, and H. Wolf, was in line with this trend. Among the poets favored by these Romantic lied composers, Goethe was at the top, followed by Heine and Mörike. …
