The ancient name of Crimea was Taurika, given by the ancient Greeks, and it was only after the Mongol rule began in the 13th century that it came to be called Crimea (meaning fortress). Around the 8th to 7th centuries BC, the Scythians migrated there, driving out the Cimmerians, and the Greeks then built colonies, and the Bosporan Kingdom was born, centered around Pantikapaion in the eastern part of the peninsula.
