In 1951, when isoniazid (INAH) and its derivative iproniazid began to be used as a treatment for tuberculosis, it was discovered that they caused euphoria and mania as side effects, and the following year it was discovered that iproniazid inhibits monoamine oxidase. This enzyme inhibitory effect was thought to be related to the antidepressant effect, and by around 1964 many monoamine oxidase inhibitors had appeared as antidepressants, but they fell out of use because they were only effective against psychogenic depression and caused liver damage.
