Ogawa City - Ogawa no Ichi

One of the ancient markets, it appears as "Shogawa City" in the middle volume of the Nihon Ryōiki and as "Ogawa City" in volume 23 of the Konjaku Monogatarishu. According to the Nihon Ryōiki, a strong woman named Mino no Kitsune lived in Ogawa City, Katakata County, Mino Province (Mino Province), and robbed goods from passing merchants. When a strong woman, the granddaughter of Dojō Hoshi, who lived in Katawa Village, Aichi County, Owari Province (near Furuwatari, Naka Ward, Nagoya City), heard about this, she sailed to Ogawa City with 50 koku of clams and 20 whips made of bear kudzu on her boat, and punished the Mino Kitsune, forcing her to retreat. In the Owari and Mino regions, water transportation using rivers was already popular from the 8th century to the first half of the 9th century, and Ogawa City was considered an important and bustling hub. There are theories that the location of the city may be Godo, Nagara, or Furuichiba in present-day Gifu City.

古代の市の一つで，《日本霊異記(にほんりょういき)》中巻に〈少川市〉，《今昔物語集》巻23には〈小川市〉とみえる。《日本霊異記》によると，三野国（美濃国）方県(かたかた)郡の小川市に三野狐(みののきつね)という大力の女が住み，往き来する商人から物資を強奪していた。尾張国愛智(あいち)郡方輪(かたわ)里（現名古屋市中区古渡付近）に住む道場法師の孫という強力の女がこれを聞き，蛤50斛と熊葛(くまつづら)の練鞭(ねりむち)20段を船に積んで小川市にのりつけ，三野狐をこらしめて退散させたという。尾張・美濃地方では８世紀から９世紀前半ころにはすでに河川を利用した水運が盛んで，小川市はその結節点として重視され，賑わっていたものと考えられる。比定地として現岐阜市の合渡(ごうど)，長良，古市場などの説がある。
