Vaughan, Henry
Born: circa 1621, Llansantfryd, Wales
[Died] April 23, 1695, Llansantfryd, Wales. English poet. Influenced by J. Donne and G. Herbert, he wrote religious metaphysical poetry. He loved the Welsh countryside where the Silurians once lived, and called himself a Silurist. He was a doctor from Oxford University, and served as a Royalist surgeon during the Civil War. He began his literary career by translating Latin poetry, and after writing secular poems such as Poems (1646) and Olor Iscanus (51), he became inclined towards mysticism after a religious experience. His representative works include The World, which begins with "One night I saw eternity," and The Retreat, which is said to have influenced Wordsworth, as well as the religious collection Silex Scintillans (50, 55).
