[Research History]
The collection of Ainu vocabulary and texts began in the early 17th century. The oldest vocabulary in Japan is Ezo Kotoba no Koto, which is believed to have been compiled around the Kan'ei period (1624-44). The first somewhat full-scale vocabulary was Moshihogusa (compiled in 1792, published in 1804), which had a vocabulary of about 4,000 words.
