〘Noun〙 A colloquial name for the sanshin, a typical Okinawan stringed instrument. It gets its name from the fact that the body is covered with snakeskin. It is slightly smaller in shape than the shamisen, and is played with a very small plectrum or artificial claw. It is a Chinese sangensu that was introduced at the end of the 14th century. It was brought to mainland Japan at the end of the Muromachi period, where it was modified to become the shamisen. Jamisen. 〘名〙 沖縄の代表的な弦楽器三線(さんしん)の俗称。胴にヘビの皮を張るところからこの名がある。形は三味線に似てやや小さく、非常に小さい撥(ばち)か義爪で奏する。中国の三弦子(さんげんす)が一四世紀末に伝わったもの。室町末期に日本本土に渡来し、改造されて三味線となる。じゃみせん。じゃひ。※上井覚兼日記‐天正三年(1575)三月二九日「琉球人しやひせんとも曳候て」
