A German writer of late Romanticism. Born in Brandenburg, he was the son of a distinguished French aristocrat who emigrated to Germany in the 17th century. He served in the Prussian military during the war against Napoleon. He was deeply fascinated by the heroic age of ancient Scandinavia and the world of medieval German knights, and wrote many fantastical stories and plays based on myths and legends. His Undine (1811), a story about the tragic love of a water fairy, is a typical example of late Romantic literature. It was made into an opera by Lortzing (1845), but it is also famous for being later adapted into a play by the French writer Giraudoux as Ondine (1939).
