The county seat of Warren County in western Mississippi, USA. Population 21,000 (1990). Located on high ground near the confluence of the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers, it is a distribution center for cotton, lumber, and beef cattle. Its main industrial products are woodworking products, machinery, trailer houses, and feed. Because of its strategic location, a French fort was built in the early 18th century, and a Spanish fort in 1791. It became a U.S. territory in 1798, and flourished as a cotton market in the first half of the 19th century. It is also known as the site of a fierce battle in the Civil War (1863).
