Japanese: エゾツツジ - えぞつつじ

It is an evergreen small shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae) that grows to a height of 10-30 cm. The leaves are obovate, 2-4 cm long, rounded at the tip, and have long hairs on the edges. In July and August, racemes are formed at the ends of the branches, and several flowers are sparsely borne. The corolla is deeply divided into five lobes, reddish purple, and about 3 cm in diameter. There are 10 stamens, with the lower five longer. It is distributed in the alpine zone of northern Honshu, and from Hokkaido to the northern Pacific coast. Because it has persistent leaf-like bracts and the shape of the fruit resembles that of the Japanese hotsutsuji, it is sometimes treated as an independent genus, Rhododendron.

ツツジ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の常緑小低木で高さ10～30センチメートル。葉は倒卵形、長さ2～4センチメートルで先が円く、縁(へり)に長い毛がある。7～8月、枝先に総状花序をつくり、数個の花をまばらにつける。花冠は深く5裂し、紅紫色、径3センチメートル内外。雄しべは10本で下方の5本は長い。本州北部の高山帯、北海道から北太平洋岸に分布する。永存性の葉状の包葉があることや果実の形がホツツジに似ているので、独立のエゾツツジ属として扱われることもある。
