Innate Releasing Mechanism

Japanese: 生得的解発機構 - せいとくてきかいはつきこう（英語表記）innate releasing mechanism

Sometimes abbreviated as IRM. It is considered the most fundamental mechanism that causes animal behavior, and is the mechanism that explains the expression of genetically programmed behavior. The term releasing mechanism (Auslösemechanismus in German) was proposed by K. Lorenz. It is based on the idea that behind an animal's innate behavior, there is always stored potential energy to express it, and that the behavior is expressed by a releaser (or a key stimulus contained in it) that draws out this potential energy.
