A representative culture of the Postclassic period of Mesoamerica (1000-1521). It can be broadly divided into two streams. The first, the Chichimeca culture, was influenced by the Toltec culture and produced the Mesoamerican-style Chalchihuites culture in what is now Zacatecas, Mexico. This culture was characterized by Mazapa and similar Mazapa pottery and architecture made of broken stone, and began to migrate south around the 10th century. During the migration, they probably acquired cultural elements that were not present in Mesoamerica, such as gold, silver, and copper metallurgy, lip ornaments, smoking pipes, and rock carvings, on the Pacific coast and spread them throughout Mesoamerica.
