An organization formed in Manchester on March 20, 1839 in response to the Corn Laws of Britain. Its direct predecessor was the Anti-Corn Law Society, which had been formed the previous year by Prentiss and others. As its name suggests, it opposed the Corn Laws, and in April of that year began publishing its official newspaper, the Anti-Corn Law Circular, calling for the repeal of the Corn Laws. Its arguments were made from the standpoint of free trade, representing the interests of the emerging merchant and industrial class, but it also gained a certain amount of support from workers while opposing the Chartist movement, effectively organizing a mass movement outside of Parliament, and thanks to the efforts of Cobden, Bright and others, it succeeded in getting Parliament to pass a resolution to repeal the Corn Laws in 1846. Officially, the association was dissolved in the same year, when its primary objective had been achieved.
