1580 or 81-1655 Dutch scholar of Western classics. Born in Ghent (now part of Belgium), he studied law at Leiden University, but developed a deep interest in the Greek and Roman classics, and later made a great contribution to both research and education as a professor of classics at his alma mater. He edited Aristotle's Poetics and published it with a translation and annotations, while also writing his own Treatise on Tragedy, which influenced French playwrights Racine and Corneille. He also edited the works of Terence, Horace, and Seneca, but his greatest academic achievement was his editing of the works of Ovid. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
