Daniel Heinsius

Dutch scholar of Western classics. Born in Ghent (now part of Belgium), he studied law at Leiden University, but developed a deep interest in the Greek and Roman classics, and later made a great contribution to both research and education as a professor of classics at his alma mater. He edited Aristotle's Poetics and published it with a translation and annotations, while also writing his own Treatise on Tragedy, which influenced French playwrights Racine and Corneille. He also edited the works of Terence, Horace, and Seneca, but his greatest academic achievement was his editing of the works of Ovid.

オランダの西洋古典学者。ヘント(現，ベルギー領)に生まれ，ライデン大学で法律を学んだがギリシア･ローマの古典に深甚な興味を抱き，のちに母校の古典科教授として研究･教育の両面で大きな功績を残した。アリストテレスの《詩学》を校訂し，それに翻訳と注釈を添えて発行する一方，みずからも《悲劇論》を著し，フランスの劇作家ラシーヌやコルネイユにも影響を与えた。ほかにテレンティウス，ホラティウス，セネカらの作品も校訂したが，最大の学問的業績はオウィディウスの諸作品の校訂である。
