...A traditional live-in school for Islamic education found in southern Thailand and from northern western Malaysia to Indonesia. In Java, the word pesantren is used to mean a place where santri (a Javanese word of Sanskrit origin meaning a student or trainee) are located, but outside the Javanese cultural sphere, the name varies depending on the region, for example, pondok is used in Malaysia to mean a boarding house. A system similar to pesantren was already in place before the arrival of Islam.
