Japanese: ムラサキホコリカビ - むらさきほこりかび
Purple dust mold - Purple dust mold
A general term for slime molds belonging to the phylum Myxomycota, subclass Myxomycetes, order Dictyostelium. Also called murasakihokori. In Japan, it grows on rotting wood and is extremely common. The plasmodium is milky white, but the fruiting body is about 5-20 mm tall. The sporangium is oblong, cylindrical, has a rounded tip, has a stalk, and is purple-brown in color, hence the Japanese name. The sporangium gathers densely to form large, conspicuous colonies. The spores are pale reddish purple with slight projections on their surface. It is said to be difficult to cultivate in pure culture.
