1825‐80 Turkish thinker, man of letters, and constitutionalist. In 1855, he was discovered by Mustafa Reşit Pasha, the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, who promoted Westernization beginning with the Tanzimat movement, and became his court secretary. Around this time, he learned French and was influenced by European thought and literature. However, he later became estranged from Grand Vizier Ali Pasha and was exiled to the provinces. He participated in the anti-dictatorial movement of the New Ottoman Society, which was formed in 1865, but was suppressed and went into exile in Paris in 1867. He later founded the newspaper Liberty in London with Namık Kemal and others. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
