A peninsula that juts out from Central Europe to the north, dividing the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It faces the southern tip of the Scandinavian Peninsula across the Kattegat Strait. In Danish it is pronounced Jylland. Its German name is Jütland, and its English name is Jutland. Geographically, its southern limit is the Iser River-Kiel (Nord Ostsee) Canal line, which roughly coincides with the border established in 811 between the Danish state and the Frankish Kingdom. Historically, the area north of the Kongeå River was called North Jutland, which was part of the Danish Kingdom, and the area south of it was called South Jutland, which was the Duchy of Slieswig (German name Schleswig), which derived from the kingdom. Denmark lost South Jutland after 1864, but in 1920 a referendum under the Treaty of Versailles restored the northern part of South Jutland to the homeland, and the border was established. As a result, a 67.6 km long border runs east-west along the Skirbaek River through the center of South Denmark, and the peninsula contains two territories: Denmark and Germany. The Danish part covers 29,776 km2 and has a population of 2,477,860 (2002), making up 69% of the Kingdom's total area and 46% of its population. The capital, Copenhagen, is located on the island of Zealand to the east of the peninsula, and the peninsula is the least developed part of the country.
