A marine animal belonging to the phylum Coelenterata, class Hydrozoa, order Medusa, family Acanthodidae. It is quite large for a hydromedusa, with an umbrella reaching a height of 10 cm and a diameter of about 6 cm. The umbrella is almost bell-shaped, with many arborescent blind tubes extending from the four rays on either side. The stalk in the center of the inner umbrella is almost cylindrical, with a mouth with developed lips at its lower end. A spiral-shaped gonad develops between the rays and the stalk. In young individuals, tentacles extend from eight parts of the umbrella edge, but in older individuals, many tentacles hang down from the entire edge of the umbrella, looking just like human hair, hence the name. There is a prominent eyespot at the base of each tentacle. The whole creature is light green, with blue stalks, gonads, rays, etc., brown internal blind tubes, and red eyespots, making it extremely beautiful. It is a species endemic to Japan, and can be found mainly from winter to spring in inlets and bays along the Pacific coast from Aomori Prefecture to Kyushu. The polyp stage of this species is not yet known. The very similar species, Polyorchis karafutoensis , is found off the coast of Hokkaido in Japan, and is smaller than the Polyorchis karafutoensis, with fewer tentacles.
