Odoshi - Threatening

...Both some and shime are probably words related to divination. Also, in areas such as Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, Hokuriku and parts of Kinki, scarecrows are called odoshi, which well describes their purpose. Burning hair and hanging the carcasses of birds and animals are common ways to ward off odors, but since burning causes the smell to dissipate even more, it is thought that originally the proper way was to burn them.
