Kanaka tribe - Kanaka (English spelling)

Japanese: カナカ族 - カナカぞく（英語表記）Kanaka

Originally meaning "people" in Polynesian, it is a colloquial term used to refer to the inhabitants of the Pacific Islands in general. Before World War II, in Micronesia under Japanese rule, the people of the Mariana Islands were mainly referred to as the Chamorro, while the people of the Marshall and Caroline Islands were collectively called the Kanaka. The people of the Mariana Islands had intermarried with Spaniards and Filipinos from an early stage, and had become increasingly Westernized culturally and socially, while the people of these regions had maintained their traditional lifestyles, and so the term was used as a derogatory term. However, in reality, the island includes a diverse range of people, both culturally and socially, and is not used as an academic term either.

元来はポリネシア語で「人」を意味し，広くは太平洋諸島の住民一般をさして用いられた俗称。第2次世界大戦前，日本統治下のミクロネシアでは，マリアナ諸島民を主としてチャモロ族と称したのに対し，マーシャル，カロリン両諸島の住民を一括してカナカ族といった。マリアナ諸島の人々は，スペイン人，フィリピン人などと早くから混血し，文化的にも社会的にも西欧化が進んでいたのに比べ，これらの地方ではそれまでの伝統的生活を守っていたため，差別的用語として用いられたのである。しかし実際には，文化的，社会的に多様な人々が含まれており，学術上の用語としても使われていない。
