1625‐1709 The first Inspector General of Police for the city of Paris (in office 1667-97). He was from the Limousin bourgeoisie. He served as a petitions examiner from 1661, and in 1667 was appointed Inspector General of Police at the Châtelet Judicial Centre in Paris, which was newly established. For 30 years, he made great contributions to maintaining public order and improving the living environment in the capital, Paris, and was highly trusted by the king. Many achievements are attributed to him, such as the organization of the patrols, the installation of street lamps, and the crackdown on beggars. From 1679 to 1682, he served as the presiding judge of the special court that tried the "poison affair" involving Madame de Boulaimvilliers, which also involved the royal court, and he was praised for his fairness.
