A planar optical system is a rotationally symmetrical optical system that eliminates spherical aberration and coma aberration, and therefore produces an image that is almost uniformly sharp near the optical axis. In this type of lens, chromatic aberration is usually eliminated as well. In reality, all practical lenses can be considered aplanatic. In a parabolic mirror, spherical aberration is completely zero for an object at infinity on the optical axis, but coma aberration remains. For this reason, for example, even in the 200-inch (508 cm) reflecting telescope at Hale Observatory (USA) that uses a paraboloid of revolution and has an aperture ratio of 1:3.3, the usable image plane at the focal plane of the primary mirror is only 20 mm in diameter.
