A town in the western foothills of the Canadian Rockies in western Alberta, Canada. It is the tourist center of Jasper National Park. It originated as a fur trading post for the Northwest Company, built in 1801. It became popular as a tourist resort with the establishment of the national park area (1907), the construction of lodges in the park (20), and the completion of the Banff-Jasper Highway.
