Born January 13, 1832 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Died July 18, 1899, Natick, Massachusetts. American children's author. Born the son of a clergyman, he was accepted into the Harvard Divinity School, but he hated the priesthood and fled to Paris upon graduation in 1860, where he lived a bohemian life for a year. He was recalled to America, and in 1864 he became the pastor of the Unitarian Church in Brewster, Massachusetts. Two years later, he gave up the pastor's job and moved to New York with the dream of becoming a novelist. He published over 120 success stories for boys, including Ragged Dick (1867). His stories shared a common pattern of a poor boy who becomes successful through virtues such as hard work, thrift, and honesty, and they caught the attention of young readers in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, his name is often quoted in connection with the American dream of success.
