[raw]? [Died] King Keimyō 2 (918) King Taebong of the late Silla Dynasty, Korea. He was the illegitimate son of King Heonan of Silla, and became a monk. He followed the orders of Gihyun and Yang Gil, but in the second year of King Hyogong's reign (898), he became independent in Songak (present-day Kaesong), and in the fifth year of the same year, he proclaimed himself king, named the country Later Goguryeo, and aimed to restore Goguryeo. In the eighth year of the same year, he named the country Majin, adopted the Silla government system, established a national system, and moved the capital to Cheorwon (present-day Cheorwon). In the fifteenth year of the same year, he named the country Taebong and the era name Sudeok Manse, and his influence extended throughout central Korea. However, he lost people's trust due to his arrogance and tyranny, calling himself Maitreya Buddha and massacring his subordinates, and he was eventually killed by his vassal Wang Geon (→Taejo).
