Nicolaus Cusanus

German philosopher, theologian, mathematician, and cardinal. Born in Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle River. He received his primary education at the school of the Brotherhood of the Common Life, and studied at the universities of Heidelberg, Padua, and Cologne, where he obtained a degree in canon law. As a priest, he worked hard to reconcile the Conciliar and Papists within the Catholic Church, and later the Eastern and Western Churches, which gave him the opportunity to come into contact with Eastern scholars of Platonic philosophy. He was appointed cardinal in 1448 and worked hard to reform the church. During these busy years, he wrote many works on philosophy, theology, and mathematics, but his main works are On Universal Unity, Intelligent Ignorance, and On Conjectures.

ドイツの哲学者，神学者，数学者，枢機卿。モーゼル河畔ベルンカステル･クースの出身。共同生活兄弟会の学校で初等教育を受け，ハイデルベルク，パドバ，ケルン大学で学び，教会法の学位を得た。司祭としてカトリック教会内の公会議派と教皇派，後には東西教会の和解に尽力したが，後者の仕事は東方のプラトン哲学研究者との接触の機会となった。1448年枢機卿に任ぜられ，教会改革のために奔走した。こうした激務の間に多くの哲学，神学，数学の著作を書いたが，主著は《普遍的和合について》《知ある無知》《推測について》である。
