Jagoke - Jagoke

Japanese:
Jagoke - Jagoke

A species of moss in the Conocaceae family. The plant is a flat thallus about 1.5 cm wide and 5-10 cm long, which splits once or twice and spreads out as a blue-green mat on moist ground or rocks. The surface of the thallus has clear hexagonal compartments, with white dot-like air pores in the center. Conococcus is dioecious, with small, oval, dark purple thallus and dome-shaped thallus at the tip of the thallus. In February and March, the stalk of the thallus grows rapidly and produces a black-brown sporophyte from the underside of the thallus. The spores are made up of many cells. C. supradecompositum is very similar to Conococcus conococcus, but differs in that the thallus is small, about 5 mm wide, yellow-green in color, and asexual buds form on the edge of the thallus in autumn. Both species are commonly found in shady areas from lowlands to mountains throughout Japan.
