A general term for five species of bivalve mollusks in the Tridacna genus of the Tridacna family, but can also refer specifically to the giant clam (illustration). This species is large and lives on the coral reefs of the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. Its shell is thick and has a wavy surface with thick, low ribs extending from the apex, and sometimes fin-like projections line the ribs. Unlike normal bivalves, it burrows on or into coral reefs with the ventral side of its shell facing up. The soft body is upside down inside the shell, and the gills are on the dorsal side.
